Ghost Medicine, By: Andrew Smith

Written on January 2, 2011

Summary: Troy and his friends are in for a long summer. Troy is in love with Luz, who is Gabriel’s older sister. He’s also friends with Tommy. Together, they’ll have to rescue themselves from Chase, save the horses, and learn about Ghost Medicine. But what happens when death comes into the picture?

What I Thought: This book was odd, confusing, and slightly disturbing. I didn’t really like it. It was slightly disturbing with the violence, and the nudity. I really kind of wish I hadn’t read this book.

The Amaranth Enchantment, By: Julie Berry

Written January 1, 2011

Summary: Lucinda is an orphan. She’s the Cinderella type, only with her uncle and step-aunt. When her uncle dies and her step-aunt kicks her out, she meets Peter (a pickpocket), Beryl (a “witch” who needs help getting back her jewel), and Prince Gregor (who she may be falling for). In a series of unfortunate events, she needs to: find the jewel, get her house back, and win the guy. Can she have it all? Or was this fairy tale never meant to be?

What I Thought: This book was lots of fun. Lucinda was a fun character, I loved the pick pocketing, and the whole prince part. It was cool that Peter helped out, and I liked his character quite a bit. Grr…upon the head of the bad guy, and Lucinda’s aunt. I loved dog (the goat), that was a really cool part. The ending was great; I like fairy tales, retold and original. And it’s good that the author put in a happily ever after ending.

Dragonfly, By Julia Golding

Summary: Tashi and Ram are the ultimate Prince-Princess arranged marriage cliché. Neither liked the other until they were kidnapped and forced to work together to escape and return to their homes. And while they do, of course they fall in love. With one problem solved, now all they have to do is escape their captors, make their way home, and save their homes. No big deal, right?

What I Thought: I loved the spunk of Tashi once the book got going. It was kind of annoying when she seemed to like the other guy, but she got over that soon enough. There were some good supporting roles, including the funny and sensitive guy who was part of the kidnappers, and the really strong lady. Yay for the prince and princess saving the day, and yay for breaking tradition. I was worried a little there at the end, but it all turned out right. Huzzah!

The Dashwood Sisters' Secrets of Love, By: Rosie Rushton

Written on December 30.

Summary: Ellie, Abby and Georgie have always had whatever they wanted. But when their Dad suddenly dies and leaves behind a mountain of debt, they have to leave their home, school, and friends. Adjusting to their new life is hard; until Ellie befriends Blake (who has a girlfriend); Abby meets Hunter, and Nick (who her new best friend is totally crushing on); and Georgie (the tomboy) meets Adam (who's starting to see her as more than just a pal).; The sisters are put through trials and tough decisions while discovering The Secrets of Love.

What I Thought: Overall I like this book. It was kind of frustrating, dealing with their Dad, and their Step-mom. Then, after their Dad dies, I just wanted to scream at their stupid step-mom. And their mom's not doing much. The guys who come into their lives are really sad as well. I really wanted it all to work out, but at the same time, I was really frustrated at the way they were acting. I was really hoping for Ellie to work things out. Abby's new friend kind of bugged me, just because she was in Abby's way, when Nick didn't want anything to do with her. And then there was Hunter, who seemed like a huge jerk, and I knew he was bad for her. Poor Georgie though, she's so young and inexperienced, I was really hoping for her story to work out if all else failed.

This book was frustrating, but I liked it. Most good books are frustrating at some point or another, that's what makes them interesting. :)
